This video is the second in a series of eight (8) video recordings of the performances of artistes at the “Music as Protest” festival that took place on the 2nd of December 2024 at Jawahar Bhavan, New Delhi, India. The event held on a Monday evening had an audience of more than 300 and was organised by Janta Radio.
This video features Chochung Dema (vocals and guitar), Shresh Sharma (violin) and Amartya Ghosh (supporting vocals) performing cover versions of two iconic protest songs that were recorded during America’s war on Vietnam. The first is a cover of “Saigon Bride” by Joan Baez recorded in 1967; the song is about a soldier who dies in the war leaving his young wife behind him. The second song is a cover of “He Was My Brother’ by Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel about the 1964 murders of three young civil rights activists, Michael Schwerner, James Chaney, and Andrew Goodman, in Mississippi, United States, by members of the white supremacist Ku Klux Klan.
