The scandalous theft of donations that were given to the Ram temple at Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh, India, has deeply hurt the sentiments of those who have voted for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). There is a widespread impression that the Narendra Modi government, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and a powerful trio in the temple trust, Champat Rai, Anil Mishra and Gopal Rao, allowed the theft to take place under their very noses. This is perceived to be an attack on the Hindu faith, since the Ram temple is considered an icon of the reawakening of the consciousness of India's majority community. These are the views expressed by Professor Anil Singh who teaches Hindi in the KS Saket College, Ayodhya, in an exclusive interview with senior journalist Arun Sinha. He added that the BJP is apprehensive that the theft of donations may adversely affect the party's support in the run-up to the forthcoming elections to the UP state legislative assembly that are scheduled for early-2027. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP lost the Ayodhya/Faizabad seat (that was considered a bastion of the Hindus) to the Samajwadi Party. The temple donation theft is bound to cast a shadow on the assembly elections, Prof Singh adds, in which BJP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath might not find it as easy as before to win the support of the core Hindu voters.
